The July  2005 LAGERS BREWER'S NOTEBOOK

"To Preserve and Enhance Fine Brewing Traditions"

Hello Lagers,

Your new secretary checking in for duty!  Sorry it’s taken a while, I’ve finally gotten everyone in my address book so as to make future communication easier.

The 2005 Lagers/Fossils picnic was held at Otter Creek Park ’s Pine Grove Pavilion on June 17-19th.  The weather was simply amazing, absolutely beautiful, we couldn’t have asked for better.  Friday night we had Barrie Ottersbach’s gumbo, delicious as always.  I counted about 50 people on Friday evening and 17 beers on tap.  Campers started arriving around noon on Friday to set up.  Our RVers  (Chuck & Terri, Jane & Bill & company) had a great spot overlooking “tent city”.  Tent City was teeming with Fossils, gathering at Tim Ho’s tent regularly for wonderful bits of wisdom for Beth Howard’s purple fuzzy book.  If you don’t know what that is, ask her next time you see her, it will make you laugh!

Barrie had a sign listing all the seafood that went into the gumbo, it included the crawfish and shrimp that was left over from the crawfish boil and donated by the Lagers.  Chuck and Terri Harp took care of the rice.  Cornbread was apparently missing from the menu, we might want to remember this for next year- the bread and garlic might have not disappeared quite as quickly!  Great food, wonderful weather, lots of good company made for a marvelous evening- we even had some table dancing (what?  Who?)  to entertain us under the disco ball!

Saturday morning began with Jackie and Cece rummaging for coffee with no results.  (Note for next year…don’t try to get anything from me before noon !)  For breakfast we were on our own.  Jason got the grill going with lots of help from Scott Boyer.  Hot dogs, hamburgers, brats and sausages, chips and sweets were available for lunch.  Thanks, Fossils!

Leah and her gang of helpers started smokin’ early on Saturday.  Bill started his garbage can turkeys about the same time.  We had 3 beef sirloins, 4 pork loins and 2 turkeys, one of which was donated by the Howards.  Thanks, Deneen for getting the rest of the meat (?).  While the wonderful scent of the smokers wafted through the area, people could be found playing very intense Jenga, poker, cornhole, going off for swimming and hiking and just simply enjoying the park in the afternoon.  The Fossils blow darts, tomahawks and who knows what else certainly must have proven to all that Hoosiers are truly fierce.  Hmmm.

A wonderful meal ensued.  On a note from our president, Deneen, a thought for next year.  She feels that we should ask people who have just arrived before dinner to defer to the workers that have been preparing and cooking all afternoon and let them be the first to be served.  Sounds reasonable.

Saturday night I counted around 100 heads and at one point 21 beers on tap.  I’m sorry I don’t have a list of those that brought the beer, Chuck Harp might have that and, if he does, I’ll send it out after he gets home from his trip to Thailand .  For now let me just thank everyone who contributed.  The raffle was amazing. It was HUGE!  We had an incredible array of items and ended up making $805.00 on it.  From that point in the night you’ll have to fill in your own blanks…all I know is that it went on LATE and everyone was merry!

Apparently breakfast on Sunday morning was a success; I have to confess to sleeping through it.  I do know that Jane was happy with all the help she received, both Fossils and Lagers joined in.  Breakfast earned $314 to contribute toward our expenses.  By early afternoon campers were packing up and heading home after a wonderful weekend of fun and frivolity!  Thanks to everyone that helped pull it off!

Lagers and Fossils got together a couple of weeks later to settle up with the money and discuss thoughts for next year.  Jane Krauth, treasurer, did an awesome job keeping track of everything for us.  The bottom line was that we came out on top with $302.00 which club officers decided to donate back to Otter Creek.

159 LONG RUN ROAD

LOUISVILLE 40245 254-3734

Directions: From downtown Louisville take I-64 east. Go past I-264 (Watterson) until you come to I-265 (Gene Snyder). Take I-265 North (it’s the ramp underneath the freeway). The first exit will be Shelbyville road (exit 27) … turn right. Go East on Shelbyville road for 3.6 miles, then turn left on Long Run Road. (Hint: Long run road is exactly 1.0 miles past the Eastwood fire station. Do NOT make a left at the street where you see the sign saying "Long Run Park", because that street is flat rock road).

Once you turn left onto Long Run Road, our house is the first driveway on the right. If you can park on the grass on either side of the driveway, go for it. Once those spots are full, please park on either side of Long Run Road.

If you want to spend the night, we have a couple of guest rooms, lots of couch and floor space, and even some room in the unfinished part of the "Deneen wing". If you want to bring a tent, go ahead.

There will of course be beer and food, but if you want to bring a dish, please feel free.

If you want to bring some beer, please feel very free to do so.

If you want to bring a keg of homebrew, please feel very, very free to do so.

If you want to bring kids, go ahead (just remember to take them with you when you leave).

I've been working with a MOJO group, Louisville Ale Tasters, to schedule a brew-day here @ BBC Beer Co./Clay Street LIVE!  Several of the Tasters wanted to see a batch being made.  Jane Krauth suggested I contact both clubs to see if there is any interest in having a brew-in here in conjunction.  The tentative date is 30 July.  This would be a brew-in, grill-out kind of thing with everyone bringing a dish to pass and meat for the grill.  The Louisville Ale Tasters is a new group of real beer drinkers with a membership of around 70.  They are interested in meeting the local HB clubs and have scheduled their next meeting @ Richo's, 16 July around 17:00 hrs.

Thoughts?
