STATE FAIR CONTEST AND BOOTH

By: Chuck Harp

BEER JUDGING COMPETITION:

The judging for homebrew at the State Fair will be held at 12:00 noon on Sunday, August 15, 1999. We will need a total of 38 judges and 19 stewards to successfully pull off the biggest state fair homebrew competition ever held in Kentucky. Please contact Bob Reed (222-7439) if you want to volunteer to be a judge, and contact Leah Dienes (540-5100) if you want to volunteer to be a steward.

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRIES:

You can drop off your entries at the South wing of the fairgrounds on Saturday, August 14, 1999 between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. This will allow you to avoid having to ship them to the fairgrounds. If you cannot bring your entries in person, you can always ship them according to the instructions in your state fair book (remember, you can't send beer or wine via the post office, so use UPS)

DECORATING THE HOMEBREW BOOTH:

Setting up and decorating the homebrew booth will take place on Tuesday, August 17, 1999. Please contact Bob Reed if you would like to help out in the layout/decoration of our booth. Remember, if you want it to look good, you should come by and give everyone your decorating tips and lend a hand.

STAFFING THE HOMEBREW BOOTH:

The booth should be staffed from 11:00 a.m. until 08:00 p.m. each day the fair is open, which is from August 19-29, 1999. Bob Reed is coordinating the sign-ups for staffing, so if you haven't signed up yet, please give him a call.

LETTING THE PUBLIC KNOW ABOUT THE LAGERS:

How will we let more people find out additional information about the lagers? This year we will try three different ideas:
1.Have a handout at the booth, along with a sign-up for getting additional info
2.Send a newsletter to everyone in the Louisville area that entered a beer in the homebrew competition
3.Conduct a Brewing Class and Demonstration at the BBC on Sept 12 (more info on next page)

The LAGER Brewer's Notebook is published monthly (well, almost monthly) by the Louisville Area Grain and Extract Research Society (LAGERS). Subscriptions are available with membership in the Society at
$15 per year, $20 for family membership. Advertisers are welcome. All inquiries should be sent to P.O. Box 5384, Louisville, KY 40255-0384, or call (502) 329-3125 (work) or
254-3734 (home).

July Minutes

The last meeting was on July 19th at the Spring Street Meeting House. There were two excellent examples of hefeweizen available for the members to sample. Mark Grueninger made the first one. It was an 80% wheat/20% malt mash, and he used the wyeast 3068 yeast to give it an excellent clove aroma, along with an appropriate level of tartness for the amount of wheat used. Joe Magruder and Eileen Martin made the second beer that was on tap. It was a 50% wheat/50% malt mash, and they used the wyeast 3056 Bavarian Wheat yeast. This beer was very smooth, and it would be very easy for someone to drink quite a few of these on a hot summer day. Thanks again to Mark, Joe and Eileen for the beer.

BREWING CLASS AND DEMONSTRATION:

There will be a brewing class and demonstration sponsored and presented by the Lagers on Sept 12 at 12:00 at the Bluegrass Brewing Company (BBC). Brian Kolb is coordinating this event, and is looking for members who want to be instructors at this class. The plan is for two or more members to make extract beers, so we can show anyone who is a potential homebrewer just how easy it is to make a batch. If you want to make a quick 5-gallon batch, talk with Brian Kolb. If you want to make an all-grain batch, talk with Brian (although with an all-grain, the class may last longer than planned). This will be our only activity for September, so come out and instruct, brew, or just enjoy your favorite BBC beverage on the deck!

Getting Together with fellow Lagers!

For those of you who would like to get together on an informal basis for a few beers, there are quite a few Lagers members who gather on Tuesday evenings at the BBC to have a few, and to talk about beer and life. Come join the group any Tuesday!

Also, on Thursday nights at Judge Roy Bean's they have $1.50 microbrew night with fifteen different microbrews on tap. Several Lagers members have been know to frequent this location on Thursdays, in their continuing pursuit of quality beers at a great price.

Hey you! Yea, you! This is the space where we were should have put your article you know, the one that you said you would write, but haven't gotten around to finishing yet. Well now you're stuck reading this dribble, instead of having a chance to be a "published author" (along with $5.00 worth of raffle tickets at the next Lagers Meeting)

BECOME A MEMBER OF THE LAGERS!

If you have never brewed a beer in your life, or are considered an expert brewer, we would like you to become a member of the Louisville Area Grain and Extract Research Society. We are a group of people like you dedicated to preserving and enhancing fine brewing traditions We talk about it, critique it, cook with it and have been known to drink a little of it in an informal manner. We would like to give you more information about our organization, including the date and location of our next gathering.
